Automatic Garage Door Systems And Common Repairs Made

Posted on: 28 October 2019

An automatic garage door system allows you to get in and out of your garage with ease, and can appear to suddenly stop working for no reason. While the system can fail suddenly, it is more likely that your garage door was showing signs that it needed to be repaired before it stopped working completely. You might notice that the door doesn't open as quickly as it used to, or that your door seems to get stuck in the same spot all the time. Problems with your tracks, tension springs, and opener can all cause your system to malfunction and make it difficult to open and close your automatic garage door.

Testing Your Tension Springs

While you don't want to adjust tension springs on your own, you can test to see if they are working properly. Open up your garage door all the way, and see if the door stays in the open position. Your door might shut a few inches or more, a sign that your tension springs are not strong enough to keep your door open. Tension springs can snap, and are only going to last up to seven years. If your system is more than ten years old and the tension springs have never been replaced, it's time to have a residential garage door repair service check them over.

Fallen Brackets and Track Bending

Tracks have to be perfectly even in order for your door to open and close properly. They can become bent if a bracket falls off and the door is opened or closed without a bracket in place. There are times when someone backs up a vehicle, hitting one of the tracks and damaging it. If a bracket falls off, it has to be replaced right away. The vibration caused by the door opening and closing loosens brackets over time. If you have a bent track, it will probably need to be replaced.

Your Garage Door Opener

An opener will last about 15 years, as long as the tension springs help hold the heavy load. Your opener may start to go slowly or strain when the door is being opened. If your opener suddenly stops working, it could mean there is no power to the garage, the unit got unplugged, or the opener has failed.

Your automatic garage door may need track repair, bracket replacement, or tension spring adjustments periodically. Contact your residential garage door repair services when your door is not working correctly and you aren't sure what is going on.
