Which Way Will the Doors Go? The Many Directions That Garage Doors Move

Posted on: 31 January 2019

Most people take it for granted that a garage door opens up and is typically made of several horizontal sections that slowly move up and roll back as the door rolls up. However, you should know that, as you begin your search for a new garage door, there is more to the standard garage door than you are currently aware. Garage doors can actually open and close in several directions, and once you know these directions you can choose what your new garage door will look like and how it will function. Here are all the ways that garage doors can open for you to consider.

Lift up, Slide Back

This type of door still opens and closes by first going up and then back, but it is a rigid construction door. That means that the door is one solid panel with no horizontal slats and no folding. The door is lifted straight up and outward, and then pushed or pulled backward overhead. Special hinges are responsible for the upward and backward movement of this kind of garage door, which means that your garage door installation will require a little extra time to complete. It also means that you may have to get out of your car to close and open the door.

Carriage Doors

Carriage garage doors mean that you have two doors that open outward from the middle. They tend to be very decorative and hearken back to the days when a garage was not a garage, but a place to keep your carriage and a horse or two to pull it. The doors had to be wide enough to allow the horse and carriage to pass through, and they had to open outward so that the driver could drive the horse and carriage in and shut the doors behind. You can use electric gate openers to control the automatic opening and closing of this type of garage door, so if you want something more decorative that also opens without a hassle, opt for carriage doors.

Sideways Slide into the Wall

Similar to the pocket doors you would install in your home, these pocket garage doors work the same way. You will need a large enough garage to do this, however. The garage door itself has to be able to slide sideways completely, either to the left or the right of the door, and not be seen when it slides to the side. They can also be electrically controlled, which is a nice feature.

Consult a garage door installation professional to decide which kind of garage door is best for you and your house.
