Prepare Your Garage For Winter's Harshness

Posted on: 13 November 2018

The cold temperatures that come with winter can cause all sorts of problems around the house. You've probably already thought about what needs to be done to prepare the heating system and the plumbing system, stocked up on the rock salt and bought yourself the shovels and boots that you'll need, but have you prepared your garage for the next several months of winter's worst. Here, you'll find a few things that you need to do to prepare the garage for winter.

Start with the Floor

Take a good look at the garage floor. Look for any cracks or moisture that has built up. Cracks can allow more moisture to seep into the garage and could get worse over the winter as the temperature rises and falls repeatedly.

To seal the cracks, you'll need a tube or two of concrete caulk and a caulking gun. Get out a shop-vac and suck all of the debris out of the cracks. Then, fill the crack with the caulk and wipe off any excess. Let it cure fully before driving into the garage.

Now, if moisture is a problem, you'll need to coat the flooring with sealant. This will help to reduce the amount of moisture that seeps up through the concrete and help to expedite the drying process of water that drips onto it when you pull your snow-covered car inside.

Now Work on the Door

You shouldn't need to do too much to your garage door to get it ready for winter. As long as it is balanced and in good condition, it should continue to work through the winter without problems.

One thing to do is to take a few minutes to clean and lubricate the tracks. The cold temperatures can cause the rollers to become a little stiff. To make it easier for the door to roll up and down, the tracks must be kept clean and lubricated.

To clean the tracks, get a bucket of hot water mixed with some liquid dish soap. Scrub the tracks very well with a scrub brush and follow up with a rinse. Let the tracks dry fully and then, apply a coat of lubricant to them. Just a good coat of WD-40 will do the trick.
