3 Ways To Take Care Of Your Garage Door This Spring

Posted on: 12 April 2018

At least a few times a year, you should pay your garage door a little extra attention. Spring is a great time to lubricate all the moving parts on your garage door, clean it inside and out, and replace any damaged or worn-out weather stripping.

1. Lubricate

The first thing you should do this spring lubricate the moving parts on your garage door. This includes the chains and all the joints where your garage door folds up on itself. Before you lubricate the moving parts, make sure that anyone who has a controller to the garage door knows that you are working on the garage door and doesn't try to use the controller. Even better, turn off the power to your garage so that the garage door can't be activated while you are working on it.

Bring a cloth with you, and be sure to wipe down and clean off each moving part before you lubricate it. This will help remove any dust and debris that you don't want to get up in the mechanisms that you are lubricating.

2. Clean It

Second, after the lubrication has had some time to dry, you are going to want to clean your garage door.

Cleaning your garage door should be pretty simple. Spray your garage door down with your garden hose. Then, use some simple environmentally friendly detergent as well as a scrub brush to clean your garage door off. A scrub brush with an extended handle, like the one you use for washing your car, will make the job easy. Then, just rinse your garage door when you are done and allow it to air dry.

It is a smart idea to wash both the inside and outside of your garage door at least once a year. Clear back anything in your garage you don't want to get wet when you clean the inside of your garage door.

If you have windows in your garage door, use window cleaner on them after you wash the larger structure.

3. Fix It

Finally, you are going to want to repair any weather stripping that has gotten damage or worn-out. Weather stripping goes around the edge of your garage door and helps seal your garage door from the outside. It helps prevent air from getting into your garage and cooling it down in the winter and heating it up in the summer. Weather stripping is one tool to stabilize the temperature in the garage.

Over time, weather stripping can get old and brittle. When that happens, just pull it off and put new weather stripping in place. Many weatherstrips have adhesive on one side, making them easy to change out.

This spring, lubricate your garage door, clean it up, and fix and replace any damaged weather stripping. For more information, contact your local garage door repair service.
